Individual counselling

You may chose to come for individual counselling to talk about the various aspects of your life and the difficlities you may have in solving some of your problems. By choosing this form of therapy, you will experience a safe place to share your deepest thoughts, feelings and memories without any judgement. As our therapeutic relationship develops, I can provide the framework for you to weave past stories, secrets, and even traumas, with current emotions, patterns of behavior and stressors so as to allow you to integrate your past with the present; and in so doing, face the future with positive anticipation.

Couples counselling

Relationships are important, and a good relationship is one that supports us throughout our life. Sadly, very few of us are taught how to sustain a good relationship with a spouse or a partner and as a reslit, many relationships encounter difficlities and tests that may litimately cause a break down or break up of the relationship. With counselling, you can gain a renewed sense of optimism, resilience and better skills so that your relationship grows and adapts to life's challenges. Your relationship doesn't have to be one of conflict, loss of respect and loss of desire it can become one of strength, understanding respect and greater resilience. You can discover deeper intimacy and feel better as an individual.

I work with couples in any kind of relationship, hetero-sexual, gay or lesbian; married or co-habiting; pre-living together; separating or divorcing; with or without children to consider.

Group counselling

You may find that there are times in your life where you want to experience personal change and understanding in a group setting. In this way, you have an opportunity to share and learn from others, to improve some specific skills and at the same time, receive group feedback and support.

Sandplay Therapy

Sandplay therapy is a process that involves creating scenes in a tray of sand, using realistic miniatures chosen from the therapist’s collection. These miniatures cover all areas of life for example: people, animals, plants, fairytales, transport, insects, food etc. The use of sand and miniatures gives us a symbolic way of expressing our feelings and viewing our lives. Sandplay therapy is an effective psychotherapeutic tool that can be used with children, adolescents and adlits.

Sandplay is a non-threatening, fun and safe space in which you are able to explore feelings and life situations that may feel threatening or overwhelming. Basically, playing with the sand, making a landscape and adding symbols, allows the psyche to find its own expression, free of the ego’s influence. Using the sandtray, you are able to externalize that which may be hidden or unconscious - it allows for the concrete manifestations of your inner world.

Sandplay therapy is a non-verbal form of therapy. It is helpful when words won’t come to you or when feelings are not really understood. Inner feelings come out in the play, providing solutions and answers that are often hidden from awareness.

The positive benefits of using sandplay include:

  • Creates bridges from the unconscious to the conscious, the inner to the outer world, mental and spiritual to physical, nonverbal to verbal, thus revealing hidden material.
  • Invites spontaneous play. There is no right or wrong.
  • Non-threatening thus allows for defenses to be decreased.
  • Serves as an adjunct to therapy.
  • Empowering for it allows you to move from the victim position to the position of creator, designer and controller of the situation now and in the future.

  • Hypnosis

Have you ever been totally absorbed while reading a book, sitting at the traffic light or watching a movie? Did you zone out to the point you didn't notice what else was going on around you? If so, you've experienced a trance-like state that's similar to what happens to you during hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that allows you to use your subconscious mind to learn new behaviors and achieve goals, rapidly and effectively.

Hypnosis is usually achieved with the help of a hypnotherapist and is different from your everyday awareness. It is not about mind control, so your cooperation is necessary. While everyone can be hypnotized, because hypnosis is a normal subconscious state, you can resist if you wish. However, if you have a genuine desire to change a behavior or habit, overcome a fear, or learn a new skill, then resisting hypnosis ruins your capacity to follow the suggestions and so motivate your mind for change.

Therefore, if you focus your attention on the hypnotist’s words and allow yourself to be guided into the hypnotic state, your subconscious will be stimulated to accept suggestions that will motivate your unconscious to take the action suggestions. So the ability to be hypnotized lies within you. We, the hypnotists, don’t force you to follow orders. Instead we employ appropriately phrased suggestions, your memory and your imagination to help you achieve your goals.

    When you're under hypnosis:

  • Your attention is more focused
  • You're deeply relaxed and calm
  • You're more open to suggestions, and less critical or disbelieving
  • The purpose of hypnosis is to help you gain more control over your behavior, emotions or physical well-being. Hypnosis has many uses including but not limited to:

  • Fears or phobias e.g. fear of flying, fear of heights.
  • To lose weight.
  • To quit smoking.
  • Confidence, self-esteem, assertiveness.
  • Motivation e.g. to study for exams, to train/exercise regularly or harder.
  • Performance anxiety e.g. fear of public speaking, exam stress, sports performance.

  • Mindfulness

"Paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally."(Kabat-Zinn, 1994)

Mindfulness is something that we all do at different times of the day. However it is often a fleeting and short lived experience which we may not notice at all. It is a type of awareness that is a pure awareness. That means it is an awareness that just observes. It makes no judgments or distinctions. It is an awareness that is an intentional, non reactive, clear awareness which is directed towards immediate experience.

Mindfulness will equip you to deal with stressful situations by accepting them and being aware of them. Mindfulness requires or allows you to be aware of your surroundings, to develop a sense of sensitivity in perceiving every moment, and enabling you to accept stressful situations, instead of avoiding them. By being aware of the inner state of your mind during Mindfulness, you can accept difficult situations in your life without much resistance.

Mindfulness helps and trains your mind from getting distracted by outside disturbances and enables you to focus your thoughts and relax the mind thereby obtaining a clear picture of your thoughts and inner states, focusing your thoughts, and even training your mind to perceive things and situations more effectively.

There are numerous researched and anecdotal benefits of mindfulness practice. Here are some suggested benefits:

  • Skilful observation of reactive and habitual patterns.
  • Improved self –esteem.
  • Manage depression, anxiety and stress more effectively.
  • Promotes physical wellbeing.
  • Reduced blood pressure.
  • Higher immune function.
  • Reduction in physical stress responses.
  • Greater sense of emotional wellbeing.
  • Increase self-awareness.
  • Become less disturbed by and less reactive to unpleasant experiences.
  • Better management of chronic pain.
  • Experience more balance and less emotional ups and downs.
  • Develop self-acceptance.
  • Who would benefit from Mindfulness Practice?

As a generalization everyone would gain some benefit from Mindfulness Practice. However the research suggests benefits for those individuals experiencing:

  • Stress
  • Chronic pain
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Addictions
  • Chronic illness
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Mood management

  • Testimonial

When I came to my first session I had been suffering anxiety attacks for six months I remember asking how long will it take

To fix this problem and why was I having it anyway???

At the very first session Janine made me feel comfortable and relaxed enough for me to start to talk about things that were so buried I had forgotten about them, I cried like a baby, and remember leaving the session feeling lighter in myself and a glimmer of hope that I colid beat this anxiety without drugs, but with Janine's help and my commitment to turn up each week.

I have been anxiety free for over 18 months and still love to keep in touch with Janine she has a special place in my life as she has been the greatest support she showed me the way back to the confident person I had always been.
